A Method for Optimal Capacity of Renewable Plant Build-in ESS for Power System Renewable Generation Accomodation

Renewable energy is volatile, intermittent and uncertain. As the scale of grid connection continues to expand and the proportion of renewable energy power gradually increases, wind and PV energy curtailment becomes a serious issues for renewable accommodation. In order to solve this problem, the reasonable configuration of battery energy storage system (ESS] in the grid is an important means to enhance accommodation of renewable energy generation. In this paper, a method combining a production cost simulation model for power system-wise and build-in ESS optimization model for a renewable plant is used to simulate the optimal operation of the build-in ESS as well as the renewalbe plant as a whole. The reasonable capacity of build-in ESS for wind and PV generation plant is quantified using the model with targeting a curtailment rate for the power system. The method is verified by an actual case study and results show that the reasonable ESS capacity for a target curtailment rate can be obtained.
