Mechanical and Electrical Performance of Stretchable Honeycomb Interconnect with Aspect Ratio Variation

Structural design engineering of interconnects in flexible electronics is an interesting study to understand the signal integrity and transmission of a signal between multiple devices over a circuit layer under different types of mechanical stress. The geometric design of flexible interconnects makes an important role in understanding the device functionality and optimization over a layout area. In this work, we try to compare variation in uniaxial stretchability of honeycomb inspired stretchable interconnect along with serpentine interconnect for the same range of aspect ratios using finite element analysis (FEA). We will be investigating how doubling the aspect ratio of these two geometries changes the layout parameters. Von Mises Stress and electrical resistance of the wires are also evaluated. The interconnect structures are designed with copper film embedded in between the two layers of polyimide. The comparative study of nature-inspired honeycomb and meandered serpentine geometry gives an overview of realizing innovative wire designs for applications of in-plane stretchable circuits.
