Study of Surface Morphology of Electrodes (Gas Diffusion Layer) and Bipolar plates in PEM fuel cell

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the clean/green power sources for stationary and transport applications. This paper deals with the morphology of a gas diffusion layer (GDL) (made of graphite material) and bipolar plate (stainless steel) in a PEM fuel cell for assessment of deterioration on its surface crack after five years of operation. The surface morphology of the gas diffusion layer, the bipolar plate was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The gas diffusion layer is subjected to oxidation as a result of hydrogen peroxide formation. The results indicate that the electrode with homogenous distribution of carbon over the surface with some cracks resulting in the deterioration of the fuel cell's performance. In the case of the Bipolar plate, no change in surface morphology is identified. The reasons for the crack in electrodes are discussed in detail. This study's results could be useful to understand the failure of the PEM cell for long-duration operation.
