Simulation of an Elevator Controller with Weight Sensing Mechanism using VHDL

Modern infrastructure involves good connectivity. In high rise apartments, malls and several other buildings this connectivity is supplied with the help of stairs, escalators or moving stairs and elevators or lifts. While have their own advantages and disadvantages, elevators have proved to be most efficient and are being used extensively. A lot of designs have been proposed for an elevator controller implemented on hardware description language, this paper proposes a redesign and study of a five-storey elevator with a weight sensor mechanism, which though conventionally available in elevators hasn't been integrated in an FPGA controller. The field programmable gate array is used for the advantages it has such as reusability and quicker and cost-effective prototyping. The basic design involves a finite state machine, which has the various states described as various floors, again each floor branching into two different states, for closed and open door. The input to the elevator controller is given with the help of button that would be provided inside as well as outside the cabin. Several sensors are used to take inputs from the user for the weight. The controller has been successfully implemented on Xilinx and simulated in a FPGA environment.
