Smart Assistive Bag for the Visually Impaired

We live in a world where people with visual impairments depend heavily on human support. To make life easier for visually impaired people, a portable bag that contains a processor with a stereo camera and a moister sensor implanted in the shoe is proposed. This paper mainly ensures the safe navigation of visually impaired people to avoid obstacles, provide assistance for purchasing items from a supermarket, and alert the user of slippery trails. The proposed prototype has a Raspberry pi processor, stereo camera, moisture sensor, and earphones. The stereo camera detects and measures the distance of the obstacle. To read text printed on an object/product, first, the camera captures the image, then the text is extracted from the scanned image. The moisture sensor is used to indicate the presence of slippery trails to the user. The text regions are converted to earphone audio signals and delivered as output to the visually impaired. The proposed prototype has been tested and proven an effective and accurate assistive tool for the visually impaired.
