Tensile property and microstructural characterization of fractured joints of rotary frictional welded similar and dissimilar metals

Recent manufacturing techniques have categorized Friction welding as a common type of welding. In this study, the tensile properties of the welded similar and dissimilar joints and the microstructure of the fractured surfaces were investigated. The metals are stainless steel (SS304) (SS), mild steel (MS), and aluminium (AA6063) (AL). The experiments are done considering the diameter of the materials and the speed of rotation of the spindle. The results revealed dissimilar joint of MS and SS gave the highest strength and rigidity values while the dissimilar joint of MS and AL was the least. The micrographs of the fractured surfaces revealed ductile fracture mechanism for all the samples except for the samples with MS and AL joint. The variations in the ductility of the dissimilar welds are connected to the obtained weak and strong joints of the metals. More so, the fractured point was a bit far from the interface region of the metals.
