Evaluation of the marshal properties of crumb rubber-modified warm mix asphalt

Waste from construction and Environmental caused by technological and industrial development is on the increase. In Nigeria, little is documented about the effects of crumb rubber on the properties of modified warm mix asphalt. Therefore, this research is aimed at evaluation of the Marshall properties of crumb rubber modified warm mix asphalt. Using response surface methodology, a central composite design was employed for the mix design parameters, namely coarse aggregate (CA), fine aggregate (FA), mineral filler (MF), bitumen content (BC), and crumb rubber (CR). CR was used as a partial replacement for Coarse aggregate and varied between 0% and 20%. The BC varied between 4% and 8%, the MF varied between 15% and 20%, the FA varied between 10% and 20%, and the CA varied between 46% and 72%. The interactive effect between the mix design parameters on the marshall properties of the asphalt mixtures was evaluated. These results indicate that the interaction of CA, FA, MF, BC, and CR influences the Marshall properties of asphalt mixtures. From the RSM analysis, a prediction model and an optimal condition of 4.018% asphalt content, 20% crumb rubber, 46% coarse aggregate, 10% fine aggregate, and 15% mineral filler were achieved for the asphalt mixtures. Generally, the research shows that the asphalt concrete used in Nigeria can be altered using crumb rubber. This indicates that there may be financial benefits from creating income from the usage of used tires, as well as from the development of jobs for those who will be in charge of gathering and processing the used tires, as well as from the building of long-lasting roadways.
