Recent Developments in Electrical Equipment and Control for Cold Rolling Mills

This paper considers a'six-high rolling stand as an example of the problems, that have to be faced and how they were solved. Drive systems The required high dynamic response of drives demands corresponding design: - torslonally rigid connecting elements between rolls and motor - direct drive without free motion - matched moments of inertia Container stations Shorten the time required for erection and commissioning and minimize the constructional work. Measurement and control of flatness Strip flatness is a typical problem encountered in cold rolling. Very often the fact, that there are no data on strip stress distribution, results in passes, being rolled at speeds which are lower than necessary, to avoid cracks. The result is a decrease in throughput. A universal system for measuring and controlling strip flatness permits full utilization of the installed power as well as higher strip speeds. Operation of the installation Video displays offer new possiblities for the display of process-information. Demands to such a video display-based operation and its advantages are demontrated.
