Realistic short-range channel response of broadband radiation towards inter and intra-device THz communication

With the advancement of 5G and 6G technology, wireless communication is inching towards higher frequency to accommodate the demand of ever-increasing data traffic. Other than the front-end communication network, a greater stress is also being placed on the short-range inter device and even shorter-range intra-device communication architecture. The terahertz range promises ultra-high data rate along with huge bandwidth in this domain. However, extensive theoretical as well as experimental study is essential for the implementation of this technology because of highly non-linear propagation response in free space as well as in environment having dielectric and reflective surfaces. Here, we have characterized and presented the propagation features of THz band photoconductive antenna in short-range direct link configuration in the presence of realistic environments. It is observed that diverging beam profile is only suitable for very-short range THz communication owing to low collection efficiency. We also studied the impact of small deviation from line-of-sight channel propagation and the effect of metal cavity on the propagation response of the broadband THz signal.
