A New Criterion For Fault Component Current Differential Protection

A new criterion for line protection based on the sampled value of fault component current was proposed. All the sampled value fault component current in the data window were summed up and the fault was discriminated on the new brake-differential plane. Compared with the traditional sampled-value differential protection and sampled-value fault component current differential protection, the new principle eliminated the need for R-S vote mechanism, taking into account both the reliability and operation speed of the protection, while eliminating the need for Fourier operations, and theoretically allowing fast and reliable operation after half a cycle of power frequency. The simulation model was built and the performance of the new criterion was verified by RTDS. The simulation results show that the new criterion can reliably discriminate the in- and out-of-zone faults, operate quickly within half a cycle.
