Multi-Microgrid Transmission Control for a Lunar Surface Power System

A network of distributed direct current (DC) microgrids (MGs) is considered for the design of a sustainable lunar surface power system. DC transmission can be used to deliver power between the MGs during periods of increased load demand or unexpected failures to increase the reliability of the network. In this paper, a three-level hierarchical control scheme is designed to determine and execute the desired power flow, suitable for space flight applications. The primary control scheme is used to manage power flow through power electronic interfaces. At the secondary level, a DC power flow algorithm is used to estimate power generation capability in each MG. Lastly, a transactive control approach is used to determine the level of power transferred between MGs. A high-fidelity simulation of a two MG lunar surface power system is used to test the performance of the control method. Four credible scenarios are used to evaluate the performance and capability of the controller.
