Effect of Thermal Design Considerations of Implanted Antenna on Tissue Heating

In this study, a numerical parametric evaluation of an implanted dipole antenna system is utilized to investigate the amount of heat generation in the surrounding body tissues. The goal is to select the optimal implanted antenna design and test environment conditions which will contribute to the regulation of a steady state tissue temperature, with minimal effect on the surrounding tissue during monitoring and treatment processes. A multi-criteria decision-making process is applied using the design parameters namely, (i) body phantom type, (ii) body phantom size, and finally (iii) thermal boundary conditions. The findings suggested that the size of the body phantom used for the design, optimization, and testing of the implanted antenna has the largest effect on the temperature values and their distribution, regardless of tissue type. In addition, if the chosen phantom size is small, the selected thermal boundary condition parameters can have a significant effect on tissue temperature.
