A Full-Wave FDTD-Circuit Solver For System Level ESD Modeling

A 3D full-wave FDTD-circuit co-simulation method is presented and applied for transient analysis of systems level electrostatic discharge (ESD) analysis. The FDTD solver and the circuit simulator are integrated through the internal ports defined between the circuit reference patch and their field connections. The hybrid solver models the ESD generator, as well as the ESD protection devices like diodes, varistors, ESD protection networks, etc., in lumped circuit physics. Meanwhile, it simulates the distributed PCB and interconnects with full wave EM analysis. The proposed solver is able to evaluate the comprehensive system level ESD susceptibility with high accuracy.
