Drone-based Water Sampling System with Active Auto-Lock Mechanism

Volcano crater lakes act as condensers and calorimeters for magmatic volatiles and heat. These lakes emerge as traps and deal more damage than magma explosions. Volcano crater lake monitoring could provide additional information about degassing volcanoes and hydrothermal systems. Thus, mitigating possible damages caused by these lakes. Sample collection is essential in acquiring relevant data for researchers. The hazards surrounding the existence of volcano crater lakes pose hindrances in obtaining the necessary information for researchers to analyze. UAVs are used in many fields to monitor and collect samples in remote and dangerous locations. This paper introduces the design and assembly of a water sampling device. This device can collect about 500mL of water samples. This design allows the device to hold and seal the water sample for 30 minutes. Furthermore, this paper introduces a system UAVs can utilize to collect water samples. This system is subjected to field quality control to prevent contamination, as suggested by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
