Discussing the Effect of Computer-Based Instruction on College Students’ Learning Outcomes in Statistics

Under the new education and instruction form of "Internet plus education", it has become a critical issue to facilitate students’ autonomous learning, and teachers’ teaching effect in statistics courses via the Computer-Based Instruction (CBI) techniques and platforms. CBI has become a popular and prevalent teaching method in statistics classes but with little empirical study into its impact on students’ learning outcomes. This study examined the use of CBI in teaching statistics as an intervention among college students over a 16-week period versus a control group. It was found that CBI had a significant main effect on students’ learning outcomes and students in CBI performed better than those who received traditional teaching. This study examined the positive effect of CBI and established the computerized teaching pattern of statistics course composed by CBI teaching concepts, modern teaching technology, and versatile CBI teaching methods. The CBI teaching pattern has been incorporated into teaching practices and achieved impressive teaching outcomes.
