A Novel Transmitarray Using Double-layer Hexagonal Element with Vias

A novel transmitarray using double-layer element with metal vias is proposed. Two hexagonal patches with similar characteruistics are etched on two sides of the single-layer substrate. Metal vias is used to improve the coupling strength and decrease the transmission loss. The proposed element and the transmitarray are simulated by Ansoft HFSS. Simulations show that the element has wide phase range of over 380 degrees. The transmission loss is above -2 dB at the center frequency of 12 GHz. The designed element shows potential in improving phase range. A square low-profile transmitarray is designed by using the proposed hexagonal element. Simulation result shows that the designed transmitarray antenna has 1-db gain bandwidth of 6.6% at 12 GHz.
