Design of Miniaturized Multiple Slots Bi-Band PIFA Antenna for 915 and 2450 MHz ISM Telemetry Using Multilayer Human Body Model

In this paper, we present the design of a compactsized dual-band implantable PIFA antenna for biomedical applications. The antenna’s overall size is 8× 8× 0.635 mm3 and radiates in the ISM band with the frequencies 915 MHz and 2.442 GHz. A layer of superstrate is placed over the patch to prevent direct contact between the radiating patch and body tissue. The antenna is simulated in a four-layer human arm model (skin, fat, muscle and bone). The antenna demonstrates a gain of -3.57dB and -2.80dB with a -10dB bandwidth of 135 MHz and 338 MHz for the two resonances respectively. The specific absorption rate is 0.01 W/kg for 1 g of fabric, which satisfies the safety criterion of the FCC standard. The simulated results are compared to existing antennas, which show that this antenna is an excellent candidate for implantable applications due to its remarkable performances in terms of miniaturization, power gain, bandwidth and SAR.
