Detection of High Impedance Fault in Low Voltage Distribution System using Discrete Wavelet Transform

A distribution system is a large system with several distinctive components. Any flaw in such a vast system risks human safety and financial loss. Conventional protection systems can easily identify low-impedance faults because the fault current is suitably large. But fault current in high impedance fault is very low so the protection scheme could not detect these types of faults. Hence HIF is a big challenge for the distribution system. In this research paper, we suggested a technique for HIF detection with the help of multiresolution analysis using discrete wavelet transform and harmonic current analysis also performed to increase its accuracy. A test system is used and the simulation model is studied using MATLAB. Wavelet analyzer tool in MATLAB is also used for feature extraction in transformer neutral current.
