Impact of Number of Layers on Magnetization Losses of Spiral Copper-Plated Multifilament Coated Conductors

It is important to reduce the magnetization losses of coated conductors for their power applications. In order to achieve both small magnetization loss and high robustness against local defect or local normal transition, it is effective to plate the multifilament coated conductors with copper, which enables the current sharing between filaments, and then winding the coated conductor spirally, so that the coupling currents decay quickly. The focus of this study is the impact of increasing the number of layers on magnetization losses of such spiral copper-plated striated (multifilament) coated conductor cable (SCSC cable),
i.e.,
CORC-like cable using copper-plated multifilament coated conductors. We measured magnetization losses of spiral copper-plated multifilament coated conductors with various number of layers, then, separated them into hysteresis losses and coupling losses, and examined the impact of number of layers on magnetization loss characteristics. We also obtained the coupling time constants and the geometry factors of coupling losses experimentally and examined the impact of number of layers on these factors.
