Electronic Health Record Systems for Enhanced Medical Care: A Survey

Electronic Health Record systems are important for smooth workflows, efficiency, and better healthcare facilities. Unfortunately, such facilities are not widely implemented in many developing nations. Electronic Health Records provide us an opportunity and an environment where we could easily inculcate the concept of ‘health first’ into our everyday lives. It would save us from making and maintaining the paperwork done to write prescriptions and double entering the data. The error of data entry that could be there due to writing can also be avoided via this. There also hasn't been any Electronic Health Record system that is used commonly in all the places throughout India as in the Western developed nations. People would become more self-conscious and aware regarding their health, productivity, and mental and physical health through this system. This literature review has been made by analyzing around fifteen papers taken from IEEE, Science Direct, and Frontier, and discusses various ways in which Electronic Health Record has been implemented, its innovations, advantages, disadvantages, using blockchain for security purposes, unstructured and structured data uses and future scope. The paper also discusses how it is used in emergency situations for refugees and in short or long trips or medical camps, factors affecting its adoption, the development of open-source EHR systems, and the importance of wearables in Electronic Health Record systems for enhanced workflows and cost-effective methods of data collection, sharing, and analyzing. The paper ends by giving advantages and disadvantages along with the future scope Electronic Health Record systems have in our lives.
