The Phenomenon and Mechanism of Fringes in Millimeter-Wave Holographic Imaging

The influence of clothing has been long ignored with good reason in short-range microwave imaging, for the reflectance of common clothes at several gigahertz is neglectable compared to that of the human body. But we observed alternating bright and dark fringes on the human body in millimeter-wave images. Further study reveals the mechanism of point-spread-function interference, which seems similar to classical interference but actually is distinct from that. And a dedicated experiment was carried out to examine its properties. This finding will lead to improved image quality and possibly a new type of profilometry.
