Ultra-High Dynamic Extinction Ratio Electro-Optical Modulator with Coupled Microring on SOI Platform

-order coupled microring electro-optical modulator with PIN structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on SOI integrated photonics platform. Ultra-high dynamic extinction ratio (ER) up to 60 dB is achieved benefiting from the high-order optical band-pass filter design. The device size on chip is only 400×220 μm
²
including electrodes and the driving voltage is 2.1 V corresponding to 0.23 W power consumption. Such integrated modulators would be promising in building compact and low-power distributed optical fiber sensing systems using low-background-noise optical pulses.
