Evaluation of High-Resolution Cascaded Multilevel Inverter Topologies for Renewable Energy Applications

High-resolution multilevel inverters are assessed for various applications in this paper. Such multilevel inverters are widely accepted solutions for high-power applications. Usually, trade-off is done in high-resolution multilevel inverters in terms of the number of semiconductor devices, device rating, isolated power source requirement, and capacitor requirement. Potential high-resolution multilevel inverter topologies are assessed in terms of these four parameters. Level Doubling Network-based hybrid cascaded three-phase multilevel inverter topology is found to be most suitable for high-power applications in terms of the parameters mentioned above. Various simulation results are provided in order to support the comparison of various topologies which are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink.
