Design of Adaptive Fuzzy PID Control Framework for 3-Axis Platform Stabilization

Primary objective of seekers in guided missiles is to follow the target. Most seekers use a 3-axis gimbal configuration for target tracking, on which an equipment and a rate gyroscope are installed. Gimbal stabilisation is crucial for these guided missiles in order to keep the tracking device pointed in the proper direction. Numerous control methodologies have been documented in order to improve gimbal’s response to rate command inputs and enable it to continue following the rate input even in the presence of perturbations. However continuously pointing towards the target in presence of disturbances as well as parametric uncertainties associated with system modeling which normally degrade system performance. For precise surveillance and three-axis gimbal stabilisation, a fuzzy PID controller based on parameter adaptation methodology is presented. To verify the proposed controller’s operation gimbal’s performance in the stabilisation loop has been evaluated, and the simulation outcome is compared with conventional PID controller. The proposed fuzzy PID controller improves the gimbal system’s adaptation to disturbances and fluctuating missile angular rotations. In comparison to the conventional PID controller, the suggested adapted fuzzy PID controller improves both transient and steady state response. Results show 41.42% improvement in tracking performance w.r.t ISE, 48.15% improvement in control effort and 19.23% improvement in the rejection time of step disturbance in comparison with conventional PID control strategy.
