Detection of Toxic Gases and Temperature Sensing for Miners using IoT Based Intelligent Helmet

Mining is a Double-edged industry, though it is essential to extract naturally occurring solid minerals, it comes with its disadvantageous risks to both the environment and humans. The immediate threats posed to the miners by underground mining often include explosions, detonations, and exposure to hazardous gasses such as Carbon monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane, and Hydrogen Sulfide(H2S). Some other dangers include harsh conditions of extreme temperature, pressure, and humidity, risk of damage due to low visibility, low Oxygen concentration, and the possibility of head injuries due to the presence of rubble and debris. The mining industry cannot be completely shut down as it is crucial for a nation's economy. However, the safety of our miners can be increased with the help of this proposed IoTbased intelligent helmet. In this paper, we attempt to develop a sensor-integrated intelligent helmet, which allows us to monitor the underground mine conditions. The transmission of the data is done through IoTbased ESP2866 which will be displayed on the LCD. This data can be assessed and evaluated to provoke a rescue mission when required and predict future conditions of the mine, thereby ensuring the safety of miners.
