Design of a Smart Gateway for Network/Device aware transmissions in M2M Communication

When two machines exchanges data, without human interaction, it can be called as M2M (Machine to Machine) communication. It is the vital part in IoT to amass the raw facts from sensors/edge devices. M2M communication takes place via wired or wireless connection. Communication via wireless channel in M2M communication enables more applications to work together effectively. M2M communication uses of different technology/devices starting from sensors to cloud - to mobile devices together to provide M2M solution for particular applications. Each communication segment is clearly defined by a set use cases developed by SDOs(standards developing organization). Gateways are the edge devices in IoT, with the ability to interact with low end devices also in the cloud to perform data aggregation and networking functions. Communication flanked by sensors and cloud can be decided by the gateway based on the essential network parameters or based on the needs of the application. Also the gateway can decide which of the available application layer protocol is the best one, to send data over the network under its operating environment. A design is proposed in this paper to make a gateway device as a smart gateway for Network/Device aware transmissions in M2M Communication. This paper covers the assessment of better application layer protocol that can be used to send different size data under different network conditions.
