Managing Renewable Energy with Smart Grid Technologies

The paper discusses a few smart grid technologies that can be used to address the problems that Renewable Energy (RE) presents for their utilization and the grid operation. Dynamic compensation with flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), synchrophasors, and dynamic line rating (DLR) are some of the technologies focused. When multiple wind turbines from a pooling station are turned on, reactive power may be absorbed. It has been noted that a nearby grid's voltage profile changes with a decent number of variations in RE generation, occasionally violating the grid code. In this situation, it's crucial to provide dynamic compensation where it is needed. The study utilizes the data from a transmission utility to assess the necessity for dynamic compensation. It also explains how synchrophasors and DLR technologies can help to improve grid management in areas with a high concentration of renewable energy sources. Essential facets of each of these smart grid technologies are covered in the paper. Determining the system stability and under-loading factors while discussing RE energy for its efficient operation and administration of an electric power grid is another contribution of the study.
