On-board Charger Topology with PFC for Light Electric Vehicle Applications

Electric vehicles (EV) offer a green solution in achieving zero-emission mobility.Nowadays, the popularity of light electric vehicles, specifically electric scooters are showing an increasing trend. As the number of EVs connected to the grid are increased, it will lead to some power quality issues. During charging, harmonics will be introduced to the power supply because an electric vehicle itself is operating as a nonlinear load. This paper proposes a boost rectifier PFC converter cascaded with DC-DC converter that serves as an on board charger for Electric vehicle. The front-end boost power factor rectifier minimizes the Total Harmonic Distortion, which in turn improves the grid power quality. Charging can be sourced from both the single-phase AC grid and the Solar PV with boost MPPT converter. In order to guarantee CCCV charging, the DC-DC buck stage will be cascaded with solar MPPT boost converter. Selection of the sources is done manually by mechanical contactors. The converetr topology is simulated and validated using MATLAB 2020b’s Simulink software.
