Energy Converters for Wind Turbines: Implementation of Control Methods

Now a day's, renewable energy is playing a key role in power generation. Also, wind energy has taken a crucial part. Here, the kinetic energy of the wind is converted to electric energy. The wind cuts the blades of the turbine and rotates the blades. In this manner, it transfers its kinetic energy into mechanical energy. To change it into electric energy, it uses a generator. But the system will not work exactly as predicted because expecting constant electric power output from a variable wind energy source (since the wind speed varies, the wind energy also varies) is impossible. In this regard, it is needed to control the voltage and current of the total system (circuit) to prevent or remove the fluctuations. For this purpose, converters are used. Many systems use back-to-back converters. One is a machine-side converter, and the other one is a grid-side converter. In this work, different control scheme for both machine side and grid side converters is proposed along with tip speed ratio control and Pitch angle control to achieve the maximum power and output power within the range, respectively.
