Model Predictive Control Scheme for a Single-Phase Integrated Battery Charger with Active Power Decoupling for EV Application

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are taking over conventional transportation in the context of fossil fuel depletion and environmental and economic reasons. A battery charger is an essential part of an EV. Among various categories of EV chargers, Integrated Battery Chargers (IBCs) are one of the best candidates considering the size and weight constraints of EVs. Apart from the hardware configuration, an effective control scheme to meet the requirements of the charger system is crucial for an EV. A Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for a single-phase IBC is proposed in this paper. The IBC system utilizes a motor drive comprising a three-phase induction motor in open-end stator winding configuration and a three-phase two-level inverter. The MPC is implemented with the objectives of reducing the harmonics and improving the grid current profile at unity power factor (UPF) while charging and eliminating 100 Hz current ripple flowing into the battery with power reversal capability. The currents through the stator windings of the motor are appropriately controlled by switching the inverter legs using MPC to meet the aforementioned objectives, while ensuring zero torque production in the motor during charging mode. A lower switching frequency operation is achieved by using the proposed MPC scheme compared to the SPWM-based control scheme for the same amount of current ripple. The proposed scheme is simulated and verified for steady-state and transient conditions using the MATLAB Simulink platform.
