A Comparative Review on Switched Capacitor Active Charge Balancing Architectures

Design and control of active charge balancing (ACB) circuits are critical aspect of a lithium-ion battery management system (BMS). Many ACB circuits are developed for different capacities of the battery pack. However, Switched capacitor ACB is better in terms of cost, construction, simple control, and power density compared to others. Therefore, this paper gives a brief outline and comparative review of all the switched capacitor ACB architectures along with detailed explanation. It also identifies a better ACB circuit operation among all the SC circuits in terms of the charge transfer operation, time to complete the balancing operation, component count, and losses.
