Prosthetic Arm: Prototype Design

Every year, amputations of the upper limb occur in large numbers all around the world and prosthetic arm is the ultimate need of the times. This project covers both the demands of providing physical health and assure the beneficence for all due to its low cost. Mostly, in the developing countries its ethical need is kept in mind while projecting this thought. The project raises the importance of biomedical engineering in the world. The movements and locations of the artificial hand are managed by an Arduino microcontroller board. The microprocessor unit gives commands to the servo motors to cause them to move in certain ways, such as grasping, pointing, and fully opening. It works by capturing EMG signals caused by the amputee's muscular activities using EMG electrodes. The fabrication of the prosthetic arm is done with the help of a 3D printer. Links and joints are placed together to help mimic with the real hand motions. We had developed the prototype of such arm and were able to perform the above mentioned movements. The cost effective arm was able to conduct its basic objective.
