An Effectual Control Technique for Islanded Operation of a Step-Up Power Converter Fed by Small Wind Turbine System

The use of renewable energy sources is growing rapidly due to environmental concerns, fossil fuel depletion, and rising energy demand. It is well-known that the structure must be altered to include renewable energy sources in the standard power system. The notion of islanded operating mode is seen to be the best option for grid integration of renewable energy sources. A DC microgrid based on a small wind turbine (SWT) is described in this research. The goal is to construct a 3kW DC autonomous wind turbine that can power 240 V domestic appliances in the case of a load shedding or a power outage from the primary power grid. To get the most power out of the boost converter and have complete control over the output voltage, the system includes a three-phase diode rectifier, the system of a small wind turbine connected through a permanent magnet synchronous generator, boost converter, and using the Perturb and Observe (P&O) method. The output voltages of the boost converter are designed to be as reliable as possible. To acquire the fast technique of MPPT and hold the constant voltage regardless of variation in wind speed, an updated technique of the P&O MPPT method is employed to operate the switching element. A MATLAB/Simulink model of a small wind turbine system using for DC microgrid is created to validate the suggested system’s reliability under changing wind speed.
