Modelling and Control of Grid Forming Inverter for Electric Vehicle Charging Systems

The electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining attention as a future mode of transportation due to reduced fossil fuel dependency and environmental awareness. However, growing fleet of EVs will become a significant load on the power grid. The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) are transforming power systems towards more complex and dynamic structures by replacing conventional synchronous generators. This has imposed new challenges on the grid stability, safety, and operation. The grid forming inverters (GFMs) have ability to withstand with these technical concerns and provide inertia support. This paper presents a GFM inverter with droop controller for EV charging systems to enhance grid stability. The system is simulated with different dynamic conditions and grid strengths using short circuit ratio (SCR). The EV charging system with controllers are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. The results confirm that the droop controlled GFM inverter can enhance system inertia and stability by regulating voltage and frequency of the system.
