A Fault Classification Method For Power Transmission Line Connected to Converter Interfaced Renewable Power Plants

The presence of CIRPP in the network heavily impacts the current and voltage signals during the fault compared to conventional generation systems. Such a significant impact of CIRPP affects the performance of available phase selection techniques. In this paper, a method for fault classification for networks connected with CIRPPs is proposed. The proposed method uses the local voltage data at the relay location. The positive and zero sequence angle indices are calculated using the sequence voltage components. The fault is classified by comparing these indices with a pre-defined range of positive and zero sequence angles. The proposed method is tested for transmission lines connected to different renewable sources (Wind type IV, Wind type III, Solar PV) and modified IEEE 39 bus system using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. The proposed technique is unaffected by fault resistance variations and is independent of diverse CIRPPs control operations. The reliability and speed of the proposed method is found to be superior compared to available methods.
