Local parameter based Islanding Detection in DC Microgrid with zero Non-Detection Zone

A local parameter-based islanding detection technique is proposed in this paper for Photovoltaic (PV) enriched DC microgrid by using the Cumulative Voltage Error (CVE) at the Point Of Connection (POC) of the associated source. The proposed technique has zero Non-Detection Zone (NDZ) as the operating point of the PV source is momentarily disturbed, which induces variation in the POC voltage for a significant CVE during islanding. The momentary disturbance is triggered only when the variation in the POC voltage exceeds a system independent threshold during a transient. The proposed scheme is tested for numerous islanding and non-islanding events under different network configurations in the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). A comparison with a few previous methods reveals that the proposed islanding detection technique has a quick detection time (maximum of 0.11s), zero NDZ, single parameter dependency, and no communication requirement.
