Rethinking TPC-C Characteristic: At Logical Write Perspective

As three decades passed from the TPC-C benchmark inception, it is indispensable to rethink the OLTP workload characteristics considering a new storage hierarchy, SSD. In this paper, we characterize the TPC-C logical write pattern since write operation is a critical impediment to SSD performance. We divide the logical write characterization into two parts. First, we evaluate the logical write references based on the flush types to determine whether hot pages are related to flush types. Second, we analyze the pages that are repeatedly flushed in specific periods. We find that i) The Stock table shows higher write skew than the Customer table, and ii) pages flushed by checkpoint policy are twice more hotter than pages flushed by LRU buffer replacement algorithm. Moreover, iii) the 4.33% of initial database pages go to 42.09% of write references in 2 minute window. The latter suggests three implications that can be adopted in SSD according to characteristics of logical write pattern results.
