Development of a State-Space Average Nanogrid Model for DC Microgrid Power Management Applications

DC microgrids provide power generation to loads by means of multiple interconnected energy sources and power converters. These energy sources can consist of renewable energy along with diesel generators and utility grid interconnects to provide reliable power to residential loads. DC microgrids have the ability to coordinate power generation from distributed energy resources and power consumption from loads to ensure continuous operation and avoid loss-of-service. Nanogrids are smaller, localized and can form part of the larger DC microgrid to facilitate power flow. To understand their dynamics, it is necessary to develop high-fidelity simulation models that represent their performance under varying conditions. Herein, the contribution of this paper is the development of a nanogrid state-space average model, validated utilizing experimental field data from an Emera Technologies nanogrid. Simulation results are obtained for three different case scenarios at varying irradiance, load, and DC microgrid generation conditions to demonstrate the functionality of each component of the nanogrid simulation model. Finally, a comparison between simulation and experimental field data collected from a commercial Emera Technologies nanogrid is made to validate the simulation model.
