Effect of Current Sharing by Metal Core on Reducing Hot-Spot Temperature of Spiral Coated Conductors

We experimentally studied the quench characteristics of a coated conductor wound spirally on a round metal core, which is similar to CORC cables. We used the simplest sample configuration, in which one coated conductor was wound sparsely in one layer and which enabled us to attach the voltage taps to the core as well as the coated conductor. We measured the voltages along the coated conductor, those along the core, and those between the coated conductor and the core. The hot-spot temperature and the current shared by the core were calculated by using the measured voltages. The impact of the current sharing on the reduction of hot-spot temperature is discussed.
