The Improvised Three Wheeler Diesel Engine Vehicles of Bangladesh: Preliminary Survey

While IC engine cars and trucks are being replaced worldwide with electric vehicles, a different revolution is taking place in Bangladesh, with the growth of improvised diesel engine three-wheeler vehicles. These local solutions to local transportation problems are improving quality of life and contributing to the economy, and are challenging some long-held notions about industrial manufacturing. In the backdrop of worldwide mergers in the automobile industry, these vehicles are being manufactured by low-income entrepreneurs in rural workshops. Prices are far lower than imported trucks, with the largest trucks costing only US$ 5000. A preliminary survey of these vehicles was conducted, trying to find trends in their manufacture and usage. Running on Chinese-made diesel engines otherwise used for water pumps, boats, cement mixers, etc., these vehicles have thrived without any common designs or official recognition. Design and sophistication have improved greatly over the decades. While the authorities and media have mostly called for a complete ban, this paper takes a more constructive approach of supporting and nourishing this fledgling industry. The existing rudimentary electrical system can be more elaborate with headlights, indicator lights and horn. The findings of the survey can be used for better designs and safety, and better recognition and regulation by the authorities.
