Design of a Ring Oscillator for IoT Applications

Recent development in analog/mixed-signal design focuses on low-power, high-speed design for portability like IOT based applications. An inverter is proposed with a larger delay with low power in this work. A low power and low frequency ring oscillator is designed with the help of proposed inverter which can be used as a clock generator in IoT application. The proposed inverter consists of two stages, which is connected in cascade. The proposed design is simulated in GPDK 180nm using CADENCE tool. The result of the proposed inverter gives a 10.9 ns delay which is 143.3% more than the conventional design in the simulation. The designed oscillator with a 17 MHz frequency consumes a power of 144.75 µW, which is nearly 4 times less than the conventional design which is suitable for potential IOT based applications and RFID tagging operations ranges from 12MHz to 1GHz.
