DC Charge Accumulation Characteristics of 11 kV Polymeric Insulator

The properties of the silicon rubber polymeric insulators are prone to be affected by the accumulation of surface charges. The present work aims to measure the surface charge accumulation on the sheds of an 11 kV polymeric insulator due to the applied voltage for various time durations. The charges deposited on the surface of the insulator will increase with voltage and with time and reaches saturation after a specific time. The insulator is energized for a predetermined time, and the charges on the sheds close to the electrodes are measured within 10 seconds after switching off the supply using an electrometer. The surface charge density is computed using the Finite Element Analysis tool and compared with the experimental values.
