On the CSRR Loaded Microstrip Patch Antennas: A Class of Metamaterial-inspired Radiators

In this paper, we critically examine the impedance matching, far-field radiation performance and near-field reactive energy density for a class of metamaterial-inspired compact multi-band antennas, namely microstrip patch antennas loaded with CSRRs (complementary split ring resonators). Using full-wave simulation via MoM (Method of Moments) based MATLAB Antenna Toolbox, we demonstrate dual-band and triple-band operation of the microstrip patch antenna close to its fundamental mode, by simply altering the rotational orientation of the embedded CSRR. The proposed triple band CSRR loaded patch exhibits broadside radiation in all the working frequencies, with different polarization states. Furthermore, using the nearzone electric and magnetic field intensities, we compute the EM Lagrangian density above the top surface of the microstrip patch to investigate the non-propagating energy distribution around such meta-resonator loaded miniaturized multi-band antennas.
