Motor Selection and Performance Assessment of SUV Electric Mobility Employing Indian Roads

In India, where the population is very large, vehicular pollution will pose a serious threat to the environment in the coming years. Electric vehicle (EV) is one way to prevent these vehicular emissions. While designing an EV, the first and foremost component to be selected is an electric motor that must produce appropriate power and other characteristics suitable for traction purposes. The choice of motor considering the Indian urban and highway drive cycle ensures better performance, longer life, and cost-efficient electric vehicle for Indian consumers. From the literature, it is evident that the two most preferred choices of motor for electric vehicles in India are the Induction Motor (IM) and Permanent Magnet Motor (PM) drives. In this study, the two motors have been compared by estimating their range based on battery SOC levels using Federal Test Procedure (FTP) drive cycle to obtain the energy usage table (kJ), power losses of various components of the vehicle, overall cost and weight of the motor and finally efficiency of the electric motor drives. Finally, the best choice selected is checked for its effect on battery parameters along with torque ripples at the motor output using the Indian urban and highway drive cycle. The analysis is performed in MATLAB platform with Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR).
