High Gain Front End Converters Based Solar PV/ Battery Fed Induction Motor Drive For Electric Vehicle

This paper presents the design, control, and performance analysis of battery / solar photovoltaic (PV) fed induction motor drive propelled powertrain topology for light electric vehicle (LEV). To interface the low voltage battery with the DC-link modified cascaded bidirectional buck/boost converter is used which provides high gain voltage conversion in both charging and discharging modes compared to conventional cascaded structure. A high gain single ended primary inductor converter (HG-SEPIC) is used to integrate solar power into the system. The HG-SEPIC reduces current ripple at the solar PV end and offers maximum efficiency along with the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control. Perturb and Observe algorithm is utilized for MPPT, which is achieved through HG-SEPIC. The propulsion induction motor is controlled through model predictive control (MPC) and mechanical sensor less operation is achieved by the usage of an adaptive full order observer (AFO). Using DC-link voltage regulation, the active power flow of the system is regulated. The presented topology is designed and modeled using Matlab / Simulink and the performance of the system is verified for various operating conditions of the electric vehicle.
