ATLHCAF and DMNGI-PLL Based Control Algorithms for a Dual-Stage SPV and BES in Shipboard Microgrid

Integrating renewable energy sources (RES) in the maritime industry is an efficient technique to decrease the pollution of water resources. This paper evaluates the functioning of the shipboard microgrid under varied operating situations. A microgrid comprising a solar photovoltaic array (SPV), battery, service loads, and propulsion motors is built and tested in the MATLAB-Simulink platform. The inclusion of propulsion motors and RES with power-electronic converter interfaces, leads to severe power quality concerns. Thus, an arctangent logarithmic hyperbolic cosine adaptive filter (ATLHCAF) is applied in the first voltage source converter (VSC) to enhance the system’s power quality. A dual modified novel generalized integrator-phase locked loop (DMNGI-PLL) is utilized for rapid and precise synchronization when the ship is at the port. A battery energy device (BES) is used in the ship owing to the intermittent nature of the SPV array. Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is applied for tuning the PI (Proportional Integer) controller to ensure the DC bus stability. Due to the complexity of numerous power source coordination and varying propulsion loads, a power management system (PMS) is crucial in planning and operating procedures.
