A Compact Koch Fractal-Based Tapered Slot Antenna With Improved Radiation Characteristics

A Compact Koch fractal-based tapered slot antenna (TSA) is proposed in this paper. The design of a conventional TSA is accomplished in the initial study. A tapered slot cut is made on the ground plane for the conventional TSA. The proposed antenna gives improved radiation characteristics compared to the conventional antenna by adding fractal shapes on its tapered sides. The antenna has been fed with a 50 Ohm microstrip line, etched on one side of the substrate. The ground plane on the other side of the substrate is defected by adding a third iteration Koch curve on the tapered sides of the proposed antenna. The dielectric substrate used in this work is an FR4 having a thickness of 1.6 mm. The antenna is fabricated with a size of 32mm x 24 mm. The simulated resonant frequencies are 1.366 GHz (1.05-1.57 GHz), 4.717 GHz (4.56-4.93 GHz), 6.372 GHz (5.95-6.66 GHz), and 9.07 GHz (8.428-9.7 GHz). This proposed structure is simulated using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software.
