Calibration of Partial Discharge Sensors in Air and SF 6 Insulation

One of important step in the development of partial discharge (PD) sensor and PD measurement is the sensor calibration. The standard used in PD sensor calibration is IEC 60270. PD sensor calibration will produce scale factor k used for converting a value from voltage to charge. This paper deals with the comparison of calibration of four sensors used in PD measurement. Those sensors are RC detector, high frequency current transformer (HFCT), antenna, and transient earth voltage (TEV) sensor. The experiment is carried out using a needle-plate electrode placed in the air medium and in the SF 6 medium, respectively. This experiment produces a conversion factor from the voltage to the charge for each sensor.
