Interconnection of freight delivery transport service networks

The interconnection of transport service networks of all modes could be seen as the interconnection of physical or information flows. Thus, interconnectivity helps to switch from short-distance to long-distance transportation or vice versa. Freight transportation has to meet environmental mobility needs and faces challenges seeking sustainable integration with the natural and built environment. The author has investigated the physical interconnectivity of mode-based transport services, seeking to define which transport modes prevail in short-distance and long-distance freight transportation. The author used a vector error correction model, which was applied for defining sea, road, and rail transport interconnectivity. The outputs of the research show that sea and rail transport services are used for long-distance freight transportation and road transport service - for short-distance freight transportation. Also, the study helps to group countries by following the volume delivered via sea and rail transport service networks.
