Fault-Tolerance Capabilities in a Switched Capacitor Multilevel Inverter Topology

Fault-tolerant (FT) operation ability is required for stable operation of switched-capacitor multilevel converters under the short-circuits (SC) and open-circuit (OC) conditions. This article proposes a new switched capacitor-based multilevel inverter that has the capability to handle single and multi-switch faults. In addition, for this inverter, phase disposition pulse width modulation (PD-PWM) is discussed. Furthermore, a comparative study has been demonstrated for the proposed fault-tolerant inverter with that of existing single DC source MLI to show the higher performance of switched-capacitor single DC source MLI. The suggested topology's effectiveness and feasibility are tested under the different conditions of fault using Matlab/Simulink and performance are evaluated using the OPAL-RT 4510 platform real-time simulator.
